Pick up almost any bag of potato chips in Canada and flip it over. Somewhere in the ingredients list, you’ll find it: canola oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, or some combination of all three. These are seed oils — and they’re in virtually every mainstream chip brand on the market.
At Gaia Organics, we do things differently. Here’s what’s actually in our chips, why we made the choices we did, and why it matters more than most people realize.
The Problem with Seed Oils in Chips
Seed oils like canola, sunflower, soybean, and cottonseed oil are highly processed fats extracted from seeds using industrial solvents and high heat. They’re cheap, shelf-stable, and ubiquitous — which is exactly why the food industry loves them.
But they’re a relatively recent addition to the human diet. For most of history, people cooked with animal fats: lard, butter, and beef tallow. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that seed oils began replacing traditional fats in processed foods, driven largely by cost and marketing rather than nutrition science.
What We Use Instead: 100% Grass-Fed Alberta Beef Tallow
Beef tallow is rendered fat from cattle — specifically, from 100% grass-fed Alberta beef. It’s the fat that was used to fry chips for generations before seed oils took over.
- It’s stable at high heat. Tallow has a high smoke point and doesn’t break down the way seed oils can when heated.
- It’s a traditional fat. Humans have been eating beef tallow for thousands of years.
- It’s Canadian. Our tallow comes from Alberta cattle — grass-fed and locally sourced.
- It tastes incredible. Once you try a tallow-fried chip, you’ll notice the difference immediately.
Our Three Ingredients
- Farm-fresh Saskatchewan russet potatoes — single-origin, grown in Canada’s potato heartland
- 100% grass-fed Alberta beef tallow — no seed oils, no blends, no shortcuts
- Vancouver Island sea salt — clean, mineral-rich, and as Canadian as it gets
No artificial flavours. No colourings. No preservatives. No seed oils. Just three real ingredients from Canadian farms.
Why “No Seed Oil” Is More Than a Trend
The seed oil-free movement has grown significantly, driven by Canadians and Americans questioning ultra-processed ingredients in their food. Searches for “seed oil free snacks,” “no seed oil chips,” and “beef tallow chips Canada” have surged as more people start reading ingredient labels.
We believe food made with real, traditional ingredients — the kind your grandparents would recognize — is worth seeking out.
